'On the night of a bombing, I spent two hours inside the Olympic ring of steel'

IT WAS supposed to be one of the most secure places in the world, impenetrable to terrorists plotting a possible attack on this summer’s Olympics.
But for two and a half hours yesterday, as yet another bomb exploded in Athens, The Times was able to wander, un-noticed and unchallenged, inside what is supposed to be the Olympic ring of steel.



The extraordinary ease with which I was able to enter and explore the main stadium and other facilities three months before the start of the Games will increase concern about the the $1 billion security arrangements and the ability of the organisers to protect athletes and spectators.

My visit coincided with a bomb explosion outside a branch of Alpha Bank and the discovery of another device outside the offices of the HSBC bank. An organisation calling itself “the Revolutionary Struggle” claimed responsibility for three blasts last week.

The organisation went on to state that VIPs and state officials will be targets during the Olympics. “Wealthy Western Olympic tourists who plan to attend the Games are undesirables,” it told a newspaper.

Greece insists that such groups pose no threat to Olympic security, an attitude that prompted Australia to increase its travel warning to the country this week.

My tour of the Olympic stadium began at dusk when I arrived in a taxi and asked a security guard if I could look around. Instead of ordering me to leave, the guard handed me a beer and showed me around the swimming pool, cycling velodrome and agora.

Astonishingly, he warned me in broken English to watch out for police officers who patrolled every 25 minutes.

After a Times photographer took more than 90 pictures of what was intended to be a secure area, I walked into the middle of the Olympic arena.

It was only then — standing in the full glare of floodlights mounted on the famous Cala-trava roof arches — that we were spotted by a policeman.

I got in through an unprotected dirt track where the security fence had petered out. I followed the path, crossed a car park, navigated a village of temporary buildings and jumped a small ditch. Twenty metres away, the light from a television flickered in a guard’s hut but he did not notice me.

The ramp to the main entrance was still under construction so I climbed over a small fence and walked right up to the chained glass doors.

I then walked down some steps to the basement. From there, it was possible to reach the pitch-black tunnel that runs under the stadium.

Even a small device detonated here would cause devastating damage and put the badly-behind-schedule stadium out of action for the Games. A larger bomb would blast a hole in the seating area above.

I waited in the tunnel for 50 minutes to see if I would be picked up by a patrol. A policeman shone in his torch three times but did not spot me.

In that time, I could have planted anything from a home-made bomb to an alarm clock to a device on a long-term timer.

The President of Chechnya, Akhmad Kadyrov, was killed on Sunday when a bomb detonated under a seating stand at a stadium in Grozny. It is believed it was planted in concrete during building work.

Just before midnight, I walked unchallenged through the mouth of the arena and into what will be the grassy centre. There is no running track in place yet.

We took photographs for several minutes until a policeman ambled out of the tunnel and shone a torch in our faces with his hand on his gun.

He asked us how we got in, saying: “Did nobody stop you?”. When we shook our heads, he shrugged and smiled before taking our press cards.

Five minutes later, two sergeants arrived and drove us to the on-site police station. After an hour I was driven to the main police station in Maroussi. There I was questioned by detectives for several hours.

In the early hours of the morning, the local chief of police arrived. After giving us a formal caution, he admitted: “The stadium is 50-50 secure but we still have three months to go. There are lots of people coming and going so it is difficult for us. It is getting tougher. This time last year you would not have been stopped.”

An Athens Olympics spokesman said: “In the sport venues, security measures in effect are applied but not on an Olympic level. Following a security sweep in July, only those with Olympic accreditation or a ticket will be allowed to enter Olympic venues.” the International Olympic Committee said: “Walking on to a building site proves nothing with regard to the measures that will apply after the venues are locked down and security sweeps take place.”

When The Times revisited the main stadium site yesterday, after our visit was made public on Greek television, there were signs that security was being stepped up. Workers was erecting a security fence and police were preventing vehicles from pulling over.
