Επιπλέον: Η Φάνη έλεγε συνέχεια (και καλά έκανε), ότι πρέπει να απαντά η χώρα μας σε τέτοιου είδους άρθρα, γιατί δεν μπορεί κανείς να παίζει με την αξιοπρέπεια ενός λαού. Το υποστηρίζει άραγε ακόμα;

Na to e-mail pou estila ston malaka. Efhomai na to diavasi:
Mr. Ostler,
I just finished reading your article titled "Athens becoming a five-ring circus" and I cannot begin to express how angry I am. It is very obvious that you have not visited Athens recently and many of your statements are just ignorant.
Having just visited Athens myself in January, I can personally tell you that the city has undergone a major transformation. The new international airport, just 3 years old, is incredible and rivals any airport in Europe or North America in size and design. The rail line connecting the airport to the center of Athens is something that most major cities in the world cannot boast to have. And let me tell you about their subway. I have been to many cities in the United States, Canada, and Europe and none of the subway systems I have been on come close to that of the one in Athens. The areas serviced are far-reaching and the subway trains are modern, brand new, and air-conditioned. 85% of the subway stations are completely new and are built in beautiful, clean marble. Lastly, there is a new tram system in the city. Yes, the tram line might be behind schedule, but it will be completed in time and will service millions of tourists in Athens and the surrounding coastal areas.
With respect to the venues, 32 new athletic venues had to be built for the Olympics (more than any other city hosting the Olympics in the past). Of these 32, 24 are 100% complete and the other 8 are at least 90% complete. Admittedly, the main Olympic Stadium should have been a little ahead of schedule at this point, but, the architect himself, Santiago Calatrava, has GUARANTEED that it will be 100% complete by the end of June and it will be used for test events prior to the Olympics. And speaking of Calatrava, he was recently quoted as saying that no other construction company that he had ever worked with had undertaken a project as efficiently as the Greek construction company that successfully moved the enormous velodrome roof over the velodrome track in just 2 days! Dennis Oswald of the IOC was speachless and could not believe that the project moved along so smoothly and successfully.
When it comes to security, Greece is spending an unprecedented $1 billion and is also being helped by NATO, the CIA, the FBI, and specialists from a host of countries. If that isn't enough security, then nothing will ever be sufficient.
Lastly, so many of your statements are incorrect and this just reflects how unprepared you were when writing this article! It is actually quite embarrassing! The drachma? My friend, the currency that is in use in Greece is the EURO....a currency which happens to be stronger than your weak American dollar. Falafel? My friend, falafel is the food of choice in the Middle East. If you look at your atlas you will see that Greece is part of South-Eastern Europe. But, as it is well known around the world, you Americans are very bad when it comes to knowledge of world geography. I'll let you in on a little secret, though: Souvlaki (or shish-kebab) is very popular in Greece. If you come in the summer you should try it and then have an ouzo or two. It might lighten you up a little
So, you can joke and put down the Greeks all you want. What comes to my mind though, is that Atlanta, an American city, hosted the worst Olympics ever. Transportation was chaotic as there weren't enough buses and trains to move people around, and your stellar (please note my sarcasm here) security allowed an American terrorist to murder an innocent person with his bomb in Atlanta's Olympic park. In typical American fashion, though, we never hear anything about that. We just hear negative comments about Athens and they haven't even staged the Olympic Games yet. I guess that's just the American way. What I say to that is this: In August when the moon is shining on a warm Athens night and the Acropolis is lit up and people are happily walking in the various regions of Athens like Plaka, Glyfada, Piraeus, Maroussi, etc., they will be taking in the beauty that is known as Greece; a beauty that is filled with over 4,000 years of history. And while the people are taking in this magnificent beauty they will not remember that many venues were completed in the last minutes prior to the Games. This is what you fail to understand and comprehend. I feel sorry for you.
p.s. I have countless digital pictures of the Athens works. Next time you decide to write an article about Athens feel free to e-mail me and I will send you any picture you want. That way, you will have some accurate data the next time around.

<<Your comments
1)<<This is the silliest an Olympic host has looked in preparation for the Games since 1936,when word leaked that Adolf Hitler secretly was training to compete in the 400-meter goose-step. >>
2)<<Will the Greeks be able to put up the buildings?>>
3)<<-- What was the world thinking? The Olympics in Athens? Did we even check to see if Bakersfield was interested? >>
4)<<So we have to worry about terrorism, especially because Athens is freeway close to many of the world's bad-guy headquarters. >>
5)<<On opening day, they'll have scuba divers painting the black lines on the bottom of the pool>>
6)<<With time running out, the roof over the swim stadium was scrapped>>
<7)<And that optimism, along with a five-drachma bill>>
My answer to each comment
1)You compare Greece with Adolf Hitler...I would like to remind you that Greece was the place that DEMOCRACY invented...Adolf Hitler was the <<father>> of NAZISM...
There are IS no connection!!!
2)Yes of course and here are some examples(ΧΑΧΑΧΑ,ΕΔΩ ΤΟΥ ΕΣΤΕΙΛΑ ΦΩΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΕΣ ΑΠΟ ΕΤΟΙΜΑ ΣΤΑΔΙΑ,ΑΠΟ ΤΟ Α.ΜΕΤΡΟ,ΤΗΝ ΓΕΦΥΡΑ,ΤΟ ΑΕΡΟΔΡΟΜΙΟ ΚΑΙ ΑΛΛΕΣ ΕΡΓΑΡΕΣ)
AND MANY OTHERS FINISHED OR UNDER CONSTRUSTION!!!So dear journalist, what do you think??DO WE HAVE THE ABILITY OR NOT???
(for more venues , visit www.daniilidis.gr)
3)oh yes,the olympic games in athens....THE PLACE THAT STARTED,INVENTED AND FIRST TOOK PLACE!!!!
4)do not be afraid...The most dangerous Terrorist Group<<17November>> was arrested the previous year.....In addition,we will spend 800million dollars for the security program(IN SUDNEY:250million dollars)
5)yes,like in Atlanta's olympics that until the last day some painters were dying the main stadium...Furthermore the 70% of the venues in atlanta were PREFAB
6)we were not obliged from the IOC to construct THIS roof...
7)our coin,3 years now,is Euro!!!! 1 Euro = 1,28$
So my friend , i would suggest you the next time to be more IMPARTIAL and well-informed
See you in ATHENS!!!! |

Na kai to diko mou. Ante na doume pote 8a ta diavasei ola afta...
Dear Sir,
I am sending you this message in reply to the article that I've recently read and that was written by you. I must say that I am deeply disappointed by the fact that you seem to have made up your mind for the success or not of the upcoming games almost 5 months before their kick-off. I agree that there are severe delays in the construction of olympic venues and that's something that should worry all. But I believe that everything is going to be ready before the olympics, even if people are working 24/7 and even if we will have "scuba divers painting the black lines on the bottom of the pool" on the opening day. And everything is going to be ready simply because there is no other way!
You may be surprised to hear, but until today, there is no big event organized by Greece that was characterized as failure. I'll give you an example by referring to the track&field IAAF world championship '97, or if you prefer non-sport events, I'll just refer to the latest Greek EU presidenship (Greece handled the expansion signing of the EU ideally). Therefore, if I were you, I'd keep a hope for successful games.
But what disappointed me the most and even made me angry, was to see a parallelization of the '36 Nazi Olympic Games to the Greek ones. I will reply to this by stating that Greece not only fought the Nazis as an ally, not only provided heavy resistance after being conquered, but it was ranked 3rd on human casualties with 2million dead. Take into account the proportion of this number to the total Greek population and you will see that the price paid is too high to be making such statements! I hope that you will reconsider your opinion at least on this subject.
Closing, I'd like to refer to the matter of security that you mention. Of course security is the major problem of our times. However, Greece has spent more than $800 million in order to provide the highest security possible. Noone, anywhere is completely secure (lately, not even in the USA). But it is certain that Greece will do everything possible to provide security for the games.
Kind Regards,
Marios Vitos
P.S. Irony and sarcasm is a very bad approach when you try to persuade somebody. I will not comment on the remarks made about the high-priestess that lit the flame, but I would suggest that you show a bit more respect to a civilization with 5000 years of history. Who knows...maybe you'll be surprised
P.S.2 We don't use drachmas anymore...
P.S.3 Athens maybe hot in the summer, but has much less humidity that Atlanta. If people could perform well there, then Athens won't be a problem. |

Αλλά τέτοια άρθρα, που καταντάνε λίβελλοι ακόμα και κατά των παραδόσεών μας, είμαστε υποχρεωμένοι να τα τσακίσουμε! Αν όχι εμείς, ποιος;

Dear Sir,
I wish to thank you for the great joy you offered me through your article published today (Monday, April 5, 2004) in the San Francisco Chronicle, under the title: “Athens becoming a five-ring circus”.
Hilarious! Exceptionally good sense of humour!
I urge you to consider a professional change. I am convinced that -although insignificant as a journalist- you would make a remarkable clown.
Having nothing to add on your unparallel comic talents, please allow me to contribute to your –surely rich- literature, the following items that might be proven useful for your future reference:
1) The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001.
(See in particular entry: “diet, in nutrition”, where you can find the following information:
…Diets vary throughout the world. North Africa, with many Muslims, and the Middle East have similar diets. A starchy food, such as rice, boiled and pounded yam mush, or cassava, is often accompanied by a spicy stew of fish or chicken with vegetables. Other popular dishes include curries, kebabs (marinated meat threaded on a stick and roasted), couscous (steamed wheat semolina), falafel (a spiced fritter), and yogurt…)
2) Hammond World Atlas, Langenscheidt Publishing Group, 2004.
(Inhere, you will find information indicating the locations of Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Europe.)
3) Official Journal of the European Communities, L 167/19, 7.7.200.
(Inhere, you will find information on Greek currency affairs.)
Please accept my apologies for suggesting such an advanced-level literature. I hope however that, with the right amount of motivation and effort, you may eventually be able to read through this material. Also note that, for your comfort, and being convinced of your mono-linguality, I only included English material.
With Best regards, |
