Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Πολύ αντικειμενικό χαρακτηρίζεις το ρεπορτάζ. Δηλαδή έδειξε τους στρατιώτες να κόβουν τα πόδια του σκυλιού; Να του βγάζουν τα μάτια κιόλα τα συναφή;

Spectators stay away from Athens
Eric Narcisse
enarcisse@theadvertiser.com

July 13, 2004

When I think of all the people that will be attending the Olympics next month in Athens, Greece, I begin to develop a sickening feeling.

Not because I’m not a big fan of the Olympics, but rather because I fear for the worst.

With everything that’s taking place in the world right now, I just have a bad feeling that something horrific, hair-raising and/or bloodcurdling is going to take place.

There is no way of convincing athletes not to attend the world’s largest sporting event, being that this is what many of them have spent years training for, but I don’t think their family and friends should.

In other words, if you aren’t competing, then don’t attend.

I understand how hard these athletes have worked to get the opportunity to compete in the Olympics, and I also know how important it may be to these athletes for their family and friends to be by their side, but this year is a bad time.

Why?

Unlike for 9/11, in which we didn’t receive any obvious warning signs, we have and still are receiving warning signs.

Three bombs went off in Athens a couple of months ago, but if you listen to those in Athens there is nothing to be concerned about. In fact, Minister of State Theodoros Roussopoulos said “there is no connection.”

What about the blackout?

On Monday, Athens and Southern Greece suffered what many are calling the worst blackout in more than a decade, but again it was downplayed by the government blaming it on “mismanagement” of the electricity grid.

Despite what they say in Athens, these are warning signs and aren’t just a coincidence. I understand that no one wants to think the worst and we want to believe that everything is going to be OK, but don’t ignore the signs.

Everything may be OK in Athens and nothing tragic may happen, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

The exploding of three bombs was strike one, the blackout on Monday was undoubtedly strike two and my gut feeling is that strike three will occur some time between Aug. 13-29.

Bottom line is beware, because we’ve been warned.

Pedia den adeksa..tou estila email kai ton ekana roba..idou ena adigrafo

I am sorry but you are the most ignorant, biased reporter (if i can call you that) I have ever met in my life. Obviously you haven't done any research and you don't know anything about Greece to come up with crap like this. You sound like one of those people who write something stupid which is science fiction and if it happens you go out to the world and state..I told you so..hoping to get a day of fame in your non-existing career..how pathetic!

So for your information, Greece is one of the most peaceful countries in the world with virtually no enemies. It would be the last target for the Terrorists because the country has very good relationship with the Islamic world and has never participated in any bloody war unlike routhless America. As far as the bombing "attack" is concerned..left wing extremists took the responsibility as an act of oposition to Capitalism and commercial exploitation of the Games. They also called before the incident to name the target and make sure that no citizen will be harmed..

Finally the.."bombs" you desctibe were harmless..noise generating propane captules..similar to those used for camping! Now you can dig a hole and burry yourself in from embarrassment!!

Wink

-----------------------------------------------

Dear editor,

Regarding the July 13th article of Mr. Eric Narcisse titled with the warning “Spectators stay away from Athens” I have to point that this is the most biased, unjustified, speculative and provocative article I have seen for a long time.

I had a really hard time to realize that what I was reading was an article in a serious newspaper and not a “bad-joke” post of a teenager on one of those unreliable Internet fora (forums Razz Razz -έχουν δυσκολία τα Αμερικανά με τις ξένες γλώσσες οπότε τους έγραψα και τη λάθος κλίση) dealing with conspiracy theories.

Perhaps Mr. Narcisse’s narcissism (pun indented Razz Razz ) prevented him of doing what every journalist does, i.e., researching and double checking his sources, reporting facts and not fiction and referring to the incidents with an undistorted and professional manner.

I am not going to help him by saying which the real facts are and where to look for the sources; that is his work and his duty as a journalist. But I can give him a hint which I hope it is clear and easy for him. He can type at Google keywords like: “Athens security budget”, “G.W. Bush and IOC praise Athens security”, “G.W. Bush senior attending the Olympics”, “35 world leaders and 2 millions spectators attending the Olympics”, and “2.5 millions Athens citizens celebrated the EURO2004 cup in a ceremony held without a hitch”.

The saddest thing is that he didn’t stop at this point. Based on his speculative view, he stretched the bad article even further by foretelling the future like a new Nostradamus (”…I fear for the worst”, “…I just have a bad feeling that something horrific, hair-raising and/or bloodcurdling is going to take place”, “…we have and still are receiving warning signs”, “…my gut feeling is that strike three will occur some time between Aug. 13-29”), and eventually making this article more appropriate for the astrology than the sports section of your newspaper. Razz Razz

To make things even worse, after his transformation to Nostradamus he changed to a State Department representative and concluded with his outrageous alarming advice “Spectators stay away from Athens… beware, because we’ve been warned”!

It could have been a bad joke if it was not serious. The Olympic Games is a very serious event, the largest gathering in the world after 9/11, and has to be taken like that particularly when there is a broad audience watching. Mr. Narcisse has every right to express his opinion but he doesn’t have the right to extend his personal fears and to panic your readers and the spectators, based on poor research and unsubstantiated prophecies.

Sincerely

Γιατί τα πεντοχίλιαρα δεν είναι πετζετάκια;

Opote kai gw tou ksanaestila email tapa!! Very Happy

Although your reply was unexpectedly polite, it does not justify the nature of your misleading article. I just want to notify you that you have provoked many proud Greeks and your email is now posted to a very popular Greek Forum regarding the Olympics where thousands of readers can send a direct complaint to you and your editor.

It is very obvious to me that you have never travelled to Greece and all you write is based on speculations. Probably you visualise Hellas as a 3rd world, dissorganised and hostile country. Stay tuned on your TV this summer when the games start and then you will understand how wrong you were. I repeat that Greece is the most peaceful country in Europe and beyond. If you do not believe me just spend a minite to read the World Atlas. You should have known better than me the power of the media and the effect they have in manipulating public opinion. I challenge you to visit Greece this summer (or next if you are so afraid) and judge for yourself.

As far as the black-out is concerned..may i remind you the 8 hour power failure in New York last year??? Hundreds of panic people were injured in their attempt to leave the city, shopping centres were looted and food was melted away!!! The Athens one only lasted 4 hours and non of the above happened. It was all related to a rare human error in one of the power stations which triggered a chain reaction to the rest. Anyway, there is no point to carry on this topic for ever but I would seriously advise you to expand your horizons and realise the world is not just the 50 States of America!

Gold medal for low expectations goes to ... Athens, Greece

Analysis

Last week it was a grass fire, this week a major blackout. What next, locusts or Persians?

They say Greece is a cauldron in the summer, and it was 104 degrees Monday when the lights went out, not to mention the air conditioners.

I am almost afraid to ask if that was centigrade or Fahrenheit.

Now, blackouts can and do happen anywhere. But only in Athens, whose Olympic preparations have read like the logbook from a 911 operator, could one come just at the moment the minister of transport was testing out a new vital rail link for the Games to showcase progress.

The official party ended up walking. So may we all next month.

The organizers want these Olympics to evoke traditional and solemn images of Greek's ancient games. I suppose that could include no electricity. The Games can always go on in darkness.

You wouldn't want to be sitting in the archery bleachers, though.

The Greek government hurried out a flurry of statements assuring that all will be well by August. This thing will be added and that thing will be fixed and the other thing will be built. Besides, it gets much cooler in Athens in August.

Down to 90.

Oh, and there was also the mention that part of the strategy in a power crunch will be to draw energy from a presumably reliable source nearby.

Bulgaria.

Now, having never been to Bulgaria, it might be one giant generator, for all I know. It might be a CVS stacked to the ceiling with batteries.

But this continues to be a strange Olympic saga indeed, when one of the contingency plans for if the lights start going out is that the Games might have to continue on Bulgarian watts.

There have also been some other recent items of interest. Something about the American-led consortium not having the security system fully installed yet.

But then, what's the hurry? The terrorists aren't due for weeks.

And if the security officials needed any further motivation, maybe they noticed someone threw a few hand grenades at Iraq's Olympic chief Monday back in Baghdad.

Actually, through all its troubles, Athens might have actually hit on the perfect marketing strategy.

Low expectations.

After stories of construction delays, worker strikes, government turnover, public antipathy, money troubles, security lapses, unfinished venues, unpaved roads, planted bombs, brush fires, blackouts and traffic jams, anything less than chaos in Athens will be considered a success.

Just imagine if the trains run on time and the lights stay on and the Games come off without gunfire.

Just imagine if everything goes so smoothly, everyone can get back to the normal pastime of the Olympics - which of course, is getting mad at the judging.

Why, then, Athens will be everybody's hero. Athens is a 10-1 underdog that should know by now if it finishes in one piece, it will look like a champion. Athens is Rocky.

Atlanta tried it the other way, promising the world. A lot of good things happened in Atlanta, but there was a little trouble with the buses running on time - I'm not sure they're all accounted for yet - and Georgia was never forgiven.

There isn't enough Tylenol in the world to treat all the headaches Athens has had to face.

And so there is just another item to put on the what-to-do list for the Olympics of 2004.

What to do in case of kidnapping.

What to do in case of chemical attack.

What to do if the place goes dark.

And a month left to add even more.

first of all I want to thank you for reading and commenting on my column.
When I wrote this column I knew that I would receive a lot of feedback, but I didn't expect it to be accompanied by anger.
My intentions were not to anger or put fear in the hearts of the readers, but moreso to alert people of the warning signs that we as a country tend to ignore too often.

I'm not trying to predict the future, because in all honesty I hope that I am dead wrong and everything runs smoothly. But if something were too happen, how many times do you think you're going to hear "I can't believe that happened?"

I'm positive that I'm not the only person that fears that something may happen, I just happened to be the one to write it. But everything I wrote was a fact. I never once said that they weren't taking extra measures to secure the premises, all I pointed out was what took place and how they were downplaying the situations.

What disturbs me more than anything from all of the letters that I have received, is that everyone continues to downplay the fact that bombs went off. I don't care if it was harmless bombs or what they used to build them, the bottom line is that they were bombs and they caused damaged.

It appears that the only time we as a people take serious notice of something is when their are casualties involved, but maybe if we didn't ignore little things so often, we would be able to prevent the bigger things.
Thank you for reading and commenting on my column and I hope that you continue to do so.

Mixed feelings on Athens revamp

Athens gets in Olympic mood

Lights go out in Greece

Athens - Brand new roads, sports facilities, public trains and a renovated city centre: the Athens Olympics have bestowed a rich heritage on the Greek capital.

Greek taxpayers have spent more than €4bn on sprucing up their capital, a notoriously gridlocked, overpopulated city where green spaces are rare and relaxing corners hard to find.

And Greeks hope that polishing the city's poor image will attract enough tourists to recoup the country's huge investment in the Games.

A new ring road stretching over 52km encircles Athens. The city's subway system was extended and a new suburban railway is to start rolling by the end of July in time for the August 13-29 Olympics.

Even the tram, scrapped at the stroke of a pen 50 years ago to make space for the growing city's car traffic, makes a comeback on the Greek capital's streets.

With more than four million people living in the city, nearly one in two Greeks calls himself an Athenian. Another 500 000 spectators are expected to crowd the city's streets during the Games.

A rich variety of cultural events awaits them.

Athens' celebrated archaeological museum has been renovated for the Games and the city's archaeological district at the foot of the Acropolis rock has been turned into a pedestrian area.

But the view of the Acropolis will be blighted by scaffolding as a decade-long renovation programme of the landmark fifth century BC monument will not be completed before the Olympics. The new Acropolis museum, announced to great fanfare a few years ago, still exists only on paper, plagued by court appeals filed by local residents and hostile archaeologists.

Landscaping sacrificed

A new promenade has been laid in the city's southern seaside suburb of Faliro. Most parts of central Athens have new pavements and the city's main squares have been overhauled after month-long construction work which disrupted citizens' daily lives.

But grand designs to plant hundreds of thousands of trees and flowers throughout the city have not been implemented. Landscaping has been sacrificed to speed up much-delayed construction works at Olympic venues.

Trees, imported from Italy, are rooted into the ground under the boiling summer sun months after the normal planting period and experts say they are unlikely to survive after the Games.

Authorities also seem keen to sweep the city's social problems under the carpet. Police have been evicting illegal street vendors, mostly immigrants without working papers, from the Athens centre. According to reports, policemen are removing homeless drug addicts from the streets and put them into nearby psychiatric clinics.

Not everyone is happy with the changes to Athens.

The city's brand-new boardwalks are often occupied by cars starved of parking space and large areas of the city are no-go areas for people with disabilities.
