Arrow Athens 2004 Briefs

Municipal officials have signed a 5.9 million euro contract with an American advertising agency. The Chicago-based Leo Burnett agency signed the contract with the greater Athens regional government for a campaign aimed at Americans, Europeans and Japanese tourists.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched through central Athens Friday to protest U.S. involvement in an Olympic security exercise which began Thursday.

Pope John Paul II urged the Athens Games to be a show of fraternity and peace, and he offered his blessings to the organizers. The pontiff met with Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyianni.

According to Athens organizers, the National Meteorological Service projects that Athens will most likely escape searing heat waves and maintain average highs of 32C in August, with humidity at 41 per cent. Low humidity and fresh northerly winds means Athens will be cooler than Atlanta and about as ward as Barcelona.

Greek police have arrested three British journalists who tried to sneak into the main Olympic stadium without permission. The journalists were spotted on Saturday inside a side entrance of the unfinished Olympic stadium. One journalist worked for BBC and two were photographers for an unidentified British magazine. The BBC said the journalist did not work for them.

It’s all in the numbers. There will be three thousand volunteers, more than 6,000 municipal staff, a fleet of vehicles, 1,500 renovated buildings, 70,000 metres of well-constructed accessible sidewalks, 150K of well-maintained roads, 6,500 large trees, tens of thousands of shrubs,10 renovated central squares, 60 information booths, 17 historical and cultural walking routes, 1,450 cultural events, 40 information booths, 20 electronic booths at busy parts of the city, two giant video walls to broadcast Games events, 3,000 staff for street cleaning and 234 vehicles, and 150 people to monitor the city for potential problems.

And finally, the city will soon announce a two-week program of about five hours of entertainment daily, with something happening every 1,500 metres which will include theatre, music and the visual arts.

Απ ότι κατάλαβα δηλαδή οι παλαίμαχοι αθλητές εντυπωσιάστηκαν με τις εγκαταστάσεις και το μετάφεραν δεόντως και στη ΔΟΕ Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy .

Greek Drama?

Home to the first modern Olympics in 1896, Athens, with its spectacular landscapes, ancient ruins and vibrant culture, was a dramatic and exciting choice when it was named the site of the 2004 Summer Games in 1997. Now, with less than four months until the Games begin, wary onlookers have expressed concerns that the city is ill-prepared to host. In addition to transportation problems, a significant number of Olympic venues remain unfinished, potentially leaving less time to install security measures. Greek officials, who have said they are spending $1 billion on Olympic security, insist everything will be in place in time for opening ceremonies, scheduled ominously for Friday the 13th. REAL SPORTS, in collaboration with Sports Illustrated, travels to Athens for a closer look.

U.S. athletes told to cool it at Olympics
Quote:

NEW YORK — American athletes have been warned not to wave the U.S. flag during their medal celebrations at this summer's Olympic Games in Athens, for fear of provoking crowd hostility and harming the country's already-battered public image.

Κυκλοφόρησε μέσω email άλλη μία δημοσκόπηση του ESPN, με 10 συνολικά ερωτήματα, και βασικό τίτλο Should the US go to the Olympics?

Wink

Laughing Laughing Laughing

Everest NORTH side FIRST summit - Greek Olympic flag take two!

May 18, 2004 03: 56 EST
"Double success! Giorgios became the first Greek that made the summit from the Northern side! His effort, speed and right planning was crowned with complete success!" reports the team.

"He made C3 to the summit in roughly 7 hours, compared to the usual 10. 'Thank you for believing in me' was his first statement to Pavlos over the sat phone the moment he reached the top. Once again the climbers make Greece proud!" says the jubilant home team.

The first Greek stood on the top of Everest South Side after 9,5 hours of climb Saturday. Giorgios raised the Greek flag as well as the flag of the Olympics on top of the world, along with a picture of a fellow Greek climber who lost his life on Cho Oyu last fall, in preparation for Everest.

The Greeks went to Everest this year, from both sides. And in honor of the summer games that will be held Athens, the teams brought the Olympic flag with them.

The national team is fielding two expeditions, one from the north and another from the south, led by Konstantinos Tsivelekas and Panagiotis Kotronaros. They are representing the, “Hellenic Mountaineering and Climbing Federation and are fully financed by Pavlos Angelatos, a Greek resident of Canada.”

Athens Organizers Assure IOC on Security
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: May 18, 2004

Filed at 3:47 p.m. ET

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Athens organizers offered the IOC more assurances Tuesday that ``everything humanly possible'' was being done to safeguard the Olympics.

A week after International Olympic Committee inspectors gave the Greeks a strong vote of confidence, Athens organizing chief Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki briefed the executive board on final venue preparations and security measures for the Aug. 13-29 games.

``If preparations continue at this pace then everything needed for successful games will be in place,'' said Denis Oswald, the IOC's chief overseer of the Athens Games.

Angelopoulos-Daskalaki reiterated that security remains Greece's top priority. Greece is spending more than $1 billion to protect the games and asked NATO to provide air and sea patrols.

``This summer, no nation will be doing more than Greece to protect those within its borders,'' she said. ``No organizing committee and no host government have ever put greater emphasis on safety and security.

``Greece has the budget, the personnel, and the security strategy we need, to do everything humanly possible to protect the Olympic Games.''

The next time Athens officials report to the IOC board will be in the Greek capital on the eve of the games.

Despite repeated delays that have clouded preparations, Angelopoulos-Daskalaki promised that Athens would offer ``magical games on a human scale.''

``What a difference four years makes,'' she said. ``When we began meeting together four years ago, we were looking together at a task that looked higher than a mountain. But with your support, and the hard work of the Greek people, the summit is now in view.''

------

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The world's largest trade union group said Tuesday the IOC should do more to protect workers who produce garments, shoes and equipment for the Athens Games.

The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions said the IOC had the ``ultimate authority'' over the licensing of goods with the Olympic logos, yet didn't sufficiently take the complaints of poorly paid workers into account.

The ICFTU said that because the Olympic symbol, flag and motto belong exclusively to the IOC, it has enormous clout to force companies to change their ways.

In response, the IOC said the two clothing companies it works with directly have strict codes of conduct but added that it couldn't control the procedures of some of its affiliated organizations.

The ICFTU has 233 affiliated organizations in 152 countries and territories and has a membership of 150 million.

------

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Greek soldiers will be used to guard train stations during the Olympics as security plans continue to expand with the games less than three months away.

Transport Minister Michalis Liapis asked for military personnel to ``guard sensitive junctions, tanks, tunnels and railway facilities.''

``As you know the railway network is spread out and, therefore, there are some dangers,'' Liapis said Tuesday following talks with Defense Minister Spilio Spiliotopoulos.

A meeting is planned later this week to work out details for the deployment -- part of 70,000 personnel from the police, armed forces and other agencies being used to help safeguard the Aug. 13-29 games.

Greece is spending more than $1.2 billion on the security plans, which includes assistance from NATO and a seven-nation advisory group led by the United States and Britain.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Preparations for the opening ceremony are a guarded secret. But here's the latest leak: A pool of water may appear at the center of the main Olympic stadium on the big day.

Private Mega television reported Tuesday that water will be pumped into the central field of the 75,000-seat stadium during the Aug. 13 spectacle. The report gave no other details, and Olympic organizers refused to comment.

Last week, The Associated Press obtained documents that describe the Olympic flame's cauldron as a ``spindle-shaped'' structure 100 feet long and 5 feet at its maximum diameter. They added that the main structure will be connected to the base by a hinge, suggesting it could move.

The opening ceremony's artistic director, Dimitris Papaioannou, also has hinted that water could be involved.

``We will see a fairy tale about the essence of the history of the country,'' he told the AP recently. ``The look of Greece will be there and Greece has the look of sea and rocks. With some scenery changes you find in there the beauty of our country.''

He refused to give any other details.
