Dear Sir,
I read with much interest your article dated 13th of July on the preparations of
Athens and its Olympic Stadium.
I hope that your article was an attempt to inject humour to the serious pages of
Newsweek. However I was greatly offended, because the article was presented as
fact and I am sure that a lot of your readers will take it as such.
To even hint that the construction of the main Olympic Stadium in Athens has
"not even broken ground" is tremendously irresponsible and malicious. If your
journalistic endeavours have not yet reached the widely publicised pictures of
the Greek Olympic Trials last month, completed in the newly built stadium and
attended by several of the world's media I suggest you try a Google search on
the subject.
Alternatively you could find pictures of the stadium in Gettyimages as of the
13th of July.
I am astounded at the fiction presented as fact in your article and I am very
much saddened that this happened to be among the pages of an esteemed
publication such as Newsweek. If this is the way news are reported in the USA,
I am very glad to be living in the UK where bastions of journalistic integrity
such as the BBC still exist.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require further links to the
actual state of the numerous venues in Athens, I will be very happy to oblige
since it is clear to me that you have failed to do your job properly with
regards to the particular article.
Next thing, you will be reporting that Athens does not actually have a brand new
(opened in 2000) international airport, complete with marble flooring and
archaeological displays, and the numerous visitors from abroad will have to
reach the city via other means, perhaps horse drawn carts!

Προβλέψεις αμερικανών αναφέρουν ότι το κόστος των αγώνων είναι πολύ πιθανό ότι θα ξεπεράσει τα... 12 δις δολάρια!

Άλλοι λένε 12 δις, άλλοι 10 δις, άλλοι ότι το αρχικό κόστος ήταν 2.5 δις ή 5 δις! Στο link που έδωσε ο SASYR πιο πάνω, το BBC το έχει χαμηλότερα "from an original £2.7bn to well over £3bn".

Δε θα ξέρουμε τίποτα οριστικό αν δεν τελειώσουν οι Αγώνες (ίσως ούτε και τότε). Εδώ ακόμα και ο Καλατράβα αρνήθηκε να μιλήσει για το τελικό κόστος του ΟΑΚΑ.

Παρακολουθώντας και τις τελευταίες συνεντεύξεις της Γιάννας, άρχισε να μας προετοιμάζει ρίχνοντας μπηχτές για "πολύ ακριβά έργα". Ας ελπίσουμε ο τελικός ισολογισμός να μην είναι πολύ αρνητικός.

Art Inspired by the Olympics

ith all the publicity surrounding the Olympics when they begin in Athens next month, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston are on a mission to educate their audiences about the history of the art the ancient games inspired.

The Met is tackling the subject in a small way, with "The Games in Ancient Athens: A Special Presentation to Celebrate the 2004 Olympics," featuring 50 works from its permanent collection made from the sixth to the fourth century B.C. They deal with events as varied as chariot racing and discus throwing.

"What we've done is take a number of objects that have been on view and regrouped them with graphics and texts that explain what the Olympics were from the first gold medal to the different sports," said Philippe de Montebello, director of the Met.

The inexpensive and timely exhibition, on view through Oct. 3, seemed like a natural. "We're hoping to increase awareness of the Olympics, especially with the possibility that New York may be the future site of the games in 2012," Mr. de Montebello added.

The show will feature the Panathenaic games, the most important games held in Athens in antiquity, which were considered sacred to the goddess Athena. On view will be nine large prize jars dating from the middle of the sixth century B.C. to the second quarter of the fourth century B.C. On one side of these vases are illustrations of the various competitions, including four-horse chariot racing, sprinting, long-distance running events and wrestling.

The Met's show will feature only a small portion of its collection. Twelve other works have been lent to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for "Games for the Gods: The Greek Athlete and the Olympic Spirit," which opens Wednesday and runs through Nov. 28.

Billed as the first major American exhibition dedicated to Greek athletics, it will include about 180 objects, 150 from the museum's permanent collection and 30 loans from private collections and institutions like the Met, the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

"As we get more and more besieged by notions of terrorism, the idea of the world coming together to celebrate virtue and excellence becomes more important," said Christine Kondoleon, curator of Greek and Roman art and art of the ancient world at the Museum of Fine Art. "It's a great bridge to the past."

The show will underscore the pervasiveness of the Greek athlete as a major force of creativity and inspiration. The male nude as a subject is explored through bronze and marble sculptures, painted vases, even ancient coins. Among the loans will be a bronze Roman head, a copy of a lost Greek original, dating from about the first century B.C., which the Kimbell bought for $4.5 million at Sotheby's four years ago.

While organizing the show, Ms. Kondoleon discovered that the museum's musical instruments department has a bronze and bone trumpet, believed to be Roman and dating from around the first or second century A.D., that was once used for the announcement of equestrian events. It, too, will be in the show.

"It was part of the musical instruments department, so we weren't aware of it," Ms. Kondoleon said.

A West Coast Pledge

Eli Broad, the chairman of two fortune 500 companies — A.I.G. SunAmerica, a financial services company, and KB Home Corporation, a tract-house building company — is determined to transform Los Angeles into as much of an art capital as it is a movie town.

"There's a lot going on here," Mr. Broad said in a telephone interview.

He has pledged $60 million to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the construction of a 70,000-square-foot building that is to house his post-1945 art collection, from both his personal holdings and from the Santa Monica-based Broad Art Foundation.

He has also given UCLArts, the school of arts and architecture at the University of California at Los Angeles, $23.2 million toward a $50 million project that includes the construction of a new art center designed by Richard Meier, to open in fall 2005. Part of the gift is a new sculpture by Richard Serra from his "Torqued Ellipse Series," commissioned by Mr. Broad for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden.

"It is a sculpture people will be able to walk inside and interact with," said Christopher Waterman, dean of the school.

The sculpture garden has a collection of works by artists including Matisse, Moore, Rodin and Calder.

"We got the parties together and paid for the sculpture," Mr. Broad said. "U.C.L.A. didn't have a Serra."

Photography Director

Having just lost Joshua Holdeman to Christie's, Simon de Pury, chairman of Phillips, de Pury & Company, rallied fast to find someone to replace him as director of its photography department. He was able to persuade Rick Wester to take his place. Mr. Wester, a private photography dealer, ran Christie's photography department for nine years, until 2001.

Mr. de Pury also announced that on Oct. 14 his Chelsea-based auction house would be selling contemporary photographs from the collection of Bernd Künne, a German collector who has been actively buying for years. The photographs, estimated at about $1 million, consist primarily of German photographs by artists like Bernd and Hilla Becher and their students Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Jorg Sasse and Axel Hütte.

Curator for the Kitchen

Debra Singer, associate curator of contemporary art at the Whitney Museum of American Art and one of the curators of this year's Biennial, has been named executive director and chief curator of the Kitchen in Chelsea, one of the oldest nonprofit interdisciplinary art spaces in the city.
